Just Read: ORIGIN by Dan Brown

I didn't even know that Dan Brown released a new book this October, till I saw it the library this week. I remember when his book Lost symbol was released, it was EVERYWHERE. It was in news, internet and at the top of all bookseller shelves. The buzz was hot, as it was preceded by arguably the most controversial and highly successful 'Da Vinci Code' and also two successful movies.

Somehow I have read all his books. Mostly because they only release once in many years. Yes, the obvious first was Da Vinci Code, because it was so popular. Then i followed it with his older novels - the very similar one Angels and Demons, early ones deception point and digital fortress, and then the new ones as they released.

I like first 50 or so pages of his books, when he is setting up the story. There is a lot of new information about the a historical structure, painting or place, some of which i like to google. But after that it is all about getting deep down into familiar territory- his hero Robert Langdon  (unwantedly) getting stuck in a situation where he needs to break a code and solve murder mystery by running around with a female partner (new every time) while saving their lives.

His new novel is pretty much on the same lines. This time it is computer genius, billionaire, Edward Kirsh who wants to reveal his discovery, which is going to change the world. And not everyone wants this discovery to get out in public. During the presentation Edward is killed just before his big reveal, and that sets up chain of events which require Robert Langdon to run around famous spots in Barcelona and give readers a guided tour, while trying to find a 47 character password to unlock Kirsh's presentation to the world. And if there is science, religion has to be involved to oppose it. So there is catholic church, palmarian sect and spanish royal family.

One thing always amuse me, Robert Langdon always finds time for his thoughts to wander, and tell readers about the historical facts (or popular theories) in detail, while he is dodging bullets or people trying to kill him.

How the new novel is different? This time Dan Brown did not wander too deep into religious pattern recognition or code breaking. Yes, it is there but there is a lot of stuff on modern technology, which is easily understood. And there is Winston, the A.I., which helps Langdon in cracking the murder mystery.

I love the way Dan Brown has visualized Guggenheim museum and tourist spots in Barcelona. I did some google on those places and pieces, and now the place is on my travel wish list. (Fingers crossed.). and some quotes by famous people, most of them to define how genius but eccentric computer billionaires are.

Overall, it is a one time read. The big reveal is not as big as it was hyped to be. And even though finale is interesting, for me it was a little too late. Parts of it are really interesting but with 450+ pages and Dan Brown cryptic way of handling things, it is not a easy read.

This is my 13th and final book of 2017. I thought Detective Kubu was my last book of year when i read it last week, but then this showed up. So in the end, a little more than 1 book per month. Not bad, I think.

I get most of my books from my local library. I read ebooks too, but I like the feel of real book in my hands more. In library, I rarely search for a new title. I mostly find interesting stuff in the just arrived section, which adds to the intrigue of reading a new book. And that's not all, this library has big collection of comics (collected editions), movies, audio books. I even got the book for my recent  certification from the library. We also used library study rooms to schedule Japanese classes for many weeks. I love my local library.

Just Read -Dying to Live by Michael Stanley

When i saw i this book recently in library's just arrived section, I thought it's new book in the No.1 Ladies detective agency series or a spin-off by same author. Very similar cover - use of  silhouettes, similarly embellished book cover, and a detective story set in Botswana. But I was wrong, it is a different series by different authors - Michal & Stanley, and it is the sixth book in their detective kubu series.

After watching and reading Mma Ramotswe fiction and later learning real story of Sereste Khama - the father of modern Botswana, the way he lead third poorest country in world to fastest growing economy,  his interracial marriage with a Ruth Williams and the furore it created, I kind of look forward to read stories about Botswana.

And this book does not disappoint. Assistant Commissioner Kubu and his team -  Ian Mcgregor the pathologist, Bushman Ixau  the constable with tracking skills and Samantha Khama the detective, along with his boss Commissioner Mabaku working together to solve a mystery of an old bushman found dead in Kalahari game reserve. The dead bushman with body of very old man, but with young looking internal organs. The book starts with this interesting but simple plot, and then start building by adding disappearance of famous witch doctor Bottele Ramala, and an american anthropologist, Christopher Collins. The investigation gets more complex when chinese mafia and foreign pharmaceutical companies, who are interested in plants with rumored life extending and healing properties.

The book is an enjoyable read. As Detective Kubu and his team solve the puzzle step by step, I was always thinking what next. The story of his daughter's failing health and the family stress adds another dimension to the book.

I found the writing very similar to Mma Ramotswe books. I could easily visualize the characters, background and setting of story.

This is my 12th book of the year, not counting all the comics especially complete Injustice series, and PMP stuff. I would say not a bad year for keeping in touch with books.

Just Read: Revolution for Dummies - Bassem Youssef

Maybe I am a fan of stuff related to Daily Show. First I started watching the Daily Show with Trevor Noah, then i read his (amazing) memoir, and now this book. The memoir of the man from Egypt who was called as Jon Stewart of Egypt, who just like original Daily Show made fun of  political establishment, but unlike original Daily Show it's host labeled as enemy of government and an exile.

Also the cover of the book is funny. A wink emoji dressed with beard and military hat, reminded me of Sacha Baron Cohen comedy 'The dictator' which has really funny first half and not so good second.

An Egyptian doctor, Bassem Youssef started to make amature YouTube videos after getting inspired with Egyptian revolution in 2011. The program was watched by millions, and his fan base increases. From Youtube he reached main programming in national channels, and somehow he became the voice of Egypt in times of revolution.  While his satire was lapped up by young urban liberals, he quickly became an eyesore to the conservative establishment. His show was a big success and often compared with The Daily Show, even Jon Stewart appeared as guest in the show. But with conservative forces running the government and social scene, the show also gained lot of criticism and controversy. As the political climate become more sensitive and Sisi took control of the government, the show was discontinued and later Bassem Youssef had to flee his home country which once made him the voice of Egypt.

The book is funny and for someone like me who doesn't know much about Egyptian revolution, a great eye opener on how conservative forces like Muslim Brotherhood used the revolution as their advantage, gained control of the government, and then lost due to mass protests which killed thousands and then declared as terrorist organization by the military leader turned president.

The book is entertaining but unlike Trevor Noah's book (which i read before this) it was not different stories weaved to make great book, it's a sequential narration of stories in interesting way, which somehow loses some of its novelty by the end. The book is heartbreaking too. A revolution against one dictator, for which thousands gave their life ended up just giving way to  another dictator run government.

Just Read: Born A Crime by Trevor Noah

I read this book sometime in March, but then after being on track for few months - reading interesting books, writing blog posts, learning Japanese, the other side of my life happened and it's September now.

Even it's been so many months, I still relish this book. The stories from his childhood during apartheid and after are beautifully written, and even though every story is written with good dose of humor, you see the big issues - racism, prejudice, poverty faced by colored community in South Africa under apartheid. Yes, it's Trevor Noah memoir, but nowhere he is trying to show himself as the HERO. Clearly that title goes to his mother - a rebel, fearless and very religious woman.

It may sound odd, but I rarely watched Daily show with Jon Stewart, mainly because by the time I got settled in U.S. as a new immigrant he was almost ready to pass the baton to Trevor Noah. And with U.S. primary and election (and yes, Donald Trump) my interest in U.S. politics increased, and rather than getting my dose through news channels I primarily watched John Oliver, Trevor Noah and Seth Meyers. So for me Daily Show always belonged to Trevor Noah, which was the main reason for  me to pick this book.

And I loved this book. His stories are fascinating. Either it's going to black, colored and white churches on Sundays with his mother, being thrown out of car while sleeping and asked to run,  watching the surveillance video of him shoplifting with police. He never tries to give out morality lessons, but you still learn a lot about life in a place which was hit hard by apartheid and poverty.

I don't think anyone could have explained apartheid in more understandable way, as did Trevor Noah - "Apartheid was a police state, a system of surveillance and laws designed to keep black people under total control. A full compendium of those laws would run more than three thousand pages and weigh approximately ten pounds, but the general thrust of it should be easy enough for any American to understand. In America you had the forced removal of the native onto reservations coupled with slavery followed by segregation. Imagine all three of those things happening to the same group of people at the same time. That was apartheid."
