Just Read: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

I have read all 7 books, seen all 8 movies and some of them more than once. However, it's been more than 7 months since the new book is out, and until few days back I had to intention of reading the famous new script. After the Deathly Hollows, the magical author, J.K. Rowling announced many times that she is done with Harry Potter and there will be no more stories. But in times of money minting series and sequels it must be tough to let go of the goose that laid golden eggs, so Harry Potter and his world are back to entertain us. A five movie series based on Fantastic beasts book, of which Rowling is a producer. A West End play and the rehearsal script book based on story written by her.

My wife is a Potter fan too, but she also gave it a pass, till she saw this in our library. She picked it up and said 'Ok. Let's try this'. After 3 days she suggested me to read it 'It's good story, you know. You can try it'. So based on recommendation of my inhouse Potter fan I picked it up.

The story is set 19 years after the original series ended. Here the protagonist is - his youngest son Albus who struggles with weight of legacy on his shoulders unlike his elder siblings. He got sorted in Slytherin and make best friends with Scorpius Malfoy, the son of Draco Malfoy. While Harry is busy with his job at ministry of magic and Albus struggling at Hogwarts, the distance between father and son kept increasing. To prove his worth and rebel against his father, Albus along with his best friend plans to change the past with the help of a stolen time turning device, which opens up pandora's box of problems for the present and future.

First of all, I must say, it is a GOOD story. And if you know the world of Harry Potter, your imagination will be able to fill all the gaps without knowing it. The emotional connection between a father who is not able to express his love, and the child who struggles in his father's world is set up superbly. The clever use of time travel brings back characters and scenes from the original series in different settings, which adds on to the interest. The book feels like a mix of Harry Potter with Butterfly effect and Back to the Future, which is not bad, but make it feel more like a fan novel rather than being part of original series. Yes, the book introduces many new characters, but it just tries to cash on old story rather than build a new one, which is unlike the fantastic beasts movie series, which is at least trying to explore a different world.

It is a good story and as it is 300+ pages of script and not a book, so very quick and easy read. I would say, it is not a must read for Harry Potter fans, but going back in the Potter world to meet old characters is somewhat satisfying.
