Pimsleur Language Program Japanese Level 1 - Lesson 16

Review Japanese Conversation

Moshi Moshi Suzuki san. Johnson desu. Konbanwa – Hello Ms. Suzuki. This is Johnson. Good evening
Ah. Johnson san. Konbanwa – Ah. Mr. Johnson. Good evening.
Suzuki san watashi to bangohan wa tabemasen ka? – Ms Suzuki won’t you have dinner with me?
Konban? Konban wa chotto. – Tonight? Tonight won’t work.
Ja ashita no ban wa? – How about tomorrow evening?
Ashita no ban? Eh. ii desu. Nanjini? – Tomorrow evening? It’s fine. What time?
Sichi ji wa? – How about 7 o clock
Eh. ii desu ne – Yes. It’s fine. Isn’t it.

New Words

O-sugimasu – too much (far too many)
Ni Jyu – Twenty
Jyubun desu – it’s enough
Jyubun ja arimasen – Its not enough
Doi-tashi-mashi-te – You are welcome
Stopu – Stop
Takusan desu – It’s enough

Japanese Grammar Notes

  • Takusan and osigumasu both refer to exceeding the desired amount (a lot, too much). Takusan is used more in positive terms ‘more but just enough’ (For ex – I ate a lot) while osugimasu has negative conotation (For ex – I ate too much)
  • Just saying hoshi is far too demanding (Jyu hachi doru hoshi desu) so ‘ga’ is added in the end so it becomes more like ‘I would like’ rather than ‘I want/I demand’. (Jyu hachi doru hoshi desu ga)
