Pimsleur Language Program Japanese Level 1 - Lesson 25

Review Conversation

Tokyo e iku michi wa dore desu ka? – Which road goes to Tokyo?
Achira desu – That one
Yokohoma e iku michi wa? – How about road to Yokohoma?
Yokohoma? – Yokohoma?
Migi desu ka? – Is it on the right?
Iie. Hidari desu – No. Its on the left
Domo arigato gozaimasu – Thank you very much
Doi tashi mashite – Your welcome

New Words

Doshite – Why?
Omise – store(s)/shop(s)
Depato – department stores
Kara – because
Osoi – late
To itte mite kudasai -  Try to say please
Osoku arimasen-  not late
Mo – already ( mo is also used as ‘also/too’)
Shimatte imas – is closed
Aitte imas – is open
Yo – for sure (at the end of sentence)

Grammar Notes

‘Kara’is always used at the end of sentence, unlike english where it is used at the start.
‘Yo’ is used at the end of sentence to emphasise. To add gravity. ‘I am sure’ ‘for sure’
When ‘kiro’ is mentioned after ‘jyu’, the sound is like ‘jykkiro’ instead of ‘jyu kiro’

Which road goes to Tokyo? - Tokyo e iku michi wa dore desu ka?
It’s this one - Khore desu
It’s that one - Achira desu
Its’ on the right - Migi desu
No. Its on the left - Iie. Hidari desu
I am going to Tokyo - Tokyo ikimasu
Fill it up Please - Manthan nishite kudasai
Please go to the right - Migi e itte kudasai
And then please go to the left - Sorekara Hidari e itte kudasai
Wait a minute please - Chotto matte kudasai
Its not on the right - Migi ja arimasen
Ok. Thanks a lot - Ok. Domo arigato
Go straight ahead please - Ja massugu itte kudasai
Is Yokohoma far? - Yokohoma wa thoi desu ka?
No. Its not far - Thoku arimasen
I am going to buy something - Nanika khaimasu
In Tokyo for our children - Tokyo de watashi no kodomo ni
Can I buy somethin? - Nanika khayemasu ka?
Today you cannot buy - Khyo wa khayemasen
Why is it? - Doshite desu ka?
The stores are closed - Omise wa shimatte imas
Are Deparment stores closed too? - Depato mo shimatte imas ka?
Yes. They are closed - Eh. shimatte imas
Why? Why is it? - Doshite? Doshite desu ka?
Because it is late - Osoi desu kara
It is late already - Mo osoi desu
Because it is late already - Mo osoi desu kara
Is department store closed already? - Depato mo shimatte imas ka?
Yes. It is closed - Eh shimatte imas
Because it is 9 o clock - Kyu ji desu kara
Because it is 9 o clock already - Mo kyu ji desu kara
Are shops closed? - Omise wa shimatte imas ka?
It is not late yet - Mada osoku arimasen kara
Is department store open? - Depato mo aitte imas ka?
Yes. It is open - Eh. aitte imas
What is the time? - Nan ji desu ka?
It’s 8 o clock - Hachi ji desu
It is late already for sure - Mo osai desu yo
Are shops open? - Omise wa aitte imas ka?
Yes. Shops are open for sure - Eh aitte imas yo
Today it is late already - Khyo wa mo osoi desu
Because it is already 10 o clock - Mo jyu ji desu kara
It is truly late for sure - Hontoni osoi desu yo
Then tomorrow I am going to shop for my husband in tokyo - Ja ashita tokyo de syujin ni nanika khaimasu
